Early in the morning, before work begins, the canteen is already crowded with workers. The workers are talking casually about everything, from household chores to the international situation, in a mix of dialects.

On the TV screen, last night's football game is still playing back, and workers are gathering in groups, watching while eating breakfast. In addition to the local representative's hot dry noodles, breakfast also includes buns, doughnuts and other varieties to satisfy the tastes of workers from all over China.

In addition to a few canteen rules and regulations on the bulletin board, there are also some propaganda posters for national projects such as the Beijing Olympic Games.

Right next to the gate, the cafeteria manager is giving a thumb up and trying to say some something to encourage everybody to work hard, but few people seem to notice him.

Some workers have already finished their breakfast. The table is stacked with neatly packed stainless-steel tableware.

Those who have not left include some workers in different uniforms and some cafeteria staff. They are watching the replay of last night’s World Cup. It is the first time that China made it to the group stage.

Outside the window the Three Gorges Dam was still under construction. A red banner reads "Build the Three Gorges Dam, Help the Beijing Olympics, Go for the Shanghai Expo".
